Advice on Buying a Safe When you Want Your Guns Safe and Out of The Hands of Young People

Found this bit of wisdom on a site called "The Cornered Cat."

A handgun is easily transported around the house, invisible to friends and casual callers but still within your direct control at all times. It is easy to answer the doorbell armed with a handgun, without anyone being the wiser. 

The handgun can even be drawn, discreetly concealed behind one leg as you open the door. Unlike a long gun, a handgun can always be available for instant use without unnecessarily threatening legitimate callers.

Handguns are also most easily kept accessible to adults but out of the hands of small children, more so than shotguns and rifles. As I've written elsewhere, when our children were very small, I soon began to develop a well-earned skepticism about my ability to know what the little darlings were up to in the next room. 

The kids, bless their active little hearts, gave me more than a few exciting little lessons about why I should not trust "child-proof" locks, or (worse) simply rely on their good natures to stay out of trouble. And the day I found a two-year-old sitting on top of my refrigerator, I realized that putting things "up high where the kids can't get it" was just a sick little joke.

"He'll never look there!"

My harrowing parenting experiences soon taught me that if I wanted the kids to stay out of something, I should not rely on anything less than a lock designed to keep adults out of that thing. 

A gun locked inside a sturdy safe would frustrate an adult thief, and so I could also trust the lock on the gun safe to keep my children out. But a gun balanced on the top shelf of the closet, hidden between the mattresses of the bed, or leaned casually against a wall in an off-limits bedroom would be just as easily accessible to a determined child as to an adult thief. If the gun was out of my sight, it had to be locked up.

DO NOT own a gun without owning a safe. And Let me tell you this too: ANY AMOUNT of reminders and/or harassment (by us) is better than anything we could say after an incident. Arrest in Shoppers Drug Mart hold-up

An Alliston man was arrested Thursday in connection to the Feb. 22 robbery at Shoppers Drug Mart on Victoria Street.
The incident at Shoppers occurred at 11:55 p.m. when "an armed suspect" entered the local pharmacy at closing time, displayed a knife and after receiving an undisclosed amount of prescription drugs, fled on foot.
At noon March 3, Nottawasaga Street Crime Unit and the Central Drug Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence in Alliston.
"As a result of the search warrant, Police seized a large quantity of Oxycodone tablets with an approximate street value of $13,180, a quantity of Canadian and American currency, cellular phones and two safes," according to the OPP press release.
Gordon Watson, 33, of Alliston was charged with two Counts of Robbery and one Count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000, and one Count of Possession for the Purpose (Schedule 1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Watson was held for a bail hearing on March 4. But it was held over to March 7.

'Despicable' thieves target church twice

Thieves have struck for a second time in less than a month at a Wokingham church, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
The silver chalice and gold plate used during holy communion, along with the safe and other valuables, were stolen from St Paul’s Church in Reading Road during the latest raid.
The burglars also caused serious damage to the church vestry, wrecking robes worn by members of the choir, during the burglary on Sunday, February 20.
The Wokingham Times reported last month how during a break-in on Monday, January 24, thieves stole microphones and around £60 cash collected as donations during a service.
Other churches in the town centre and around the borough, including All Saints in Wiltshire Road and St Catherine’s in Sindlesham, have also been targeted over the last six weeks.
In another recent break-in, a laptop was stolen from St Mary’s Church in Twyford.
Police have stepped up patrols around churches in the borough in response to the spate of thefts and have made one arrest, although the man has since been released on bail.
Chief Inspector Christian Bunt, commander of Wokingham police, has visited St Paul’s Church personally since the two break-ins and condemned the people responsible.
He said: “It is something we are taking very seriously.
“To have any religious establishment broken into always has a big impact on community confidence and the kind of people that are willing to break into a religious establishment, which do a lot of good work for the local community and actually help vulnerable people, is pretty despicable.
“It is important to remember the churches do help vulnerable people, so for them to be victims of thefts and burglaries is very disappointing.
“We have been doing a lot of work around it. We put extra patrols in place and we actually have arrested a suspect and that person is on bail at the moment.”
The theft of valuables and damage to the ancient buildings, including forced windows and doors and gaping holes in walls where safes have been removed, is costing the churches thousands of pounds in repairs.
The Reverend Canon David Hodgson, who is area manager for churches in Wokingham and the reverend of All Saints Church, said: “In getting into the safe at St Paul’s they had to demolish the small inner wall.
“It is ridiculous, it’s like a scene from a Hollywood bank robbery movie where thieves are drilling through the walls.
“We are really upset about this at St Paul’s. Although we are confident police are doing their best, I’m looking to have a meeting with the police commander just to see what else can be done.
“We are worried All Saints might be hit again.”
During the raid on All Saints in January, thieves stole the holy oil used in baptisms, however this was later found dumped in Wokingham.

Why I Bought a Small Handgun Safe
