Gun Safes for Guns Must be Secured or Heavy to Avoid Being Carried Off

The police report from Boston reads: Southerly Road, 900 block. Between 3 p.m. Oct. 14 and 5 p.m. Oct. 16. Someone used keys to enter an apartment and stole one safe containing a Baltimore City police service weapon and two loaded magazines and another safe containing ammunition, body armor and keys to the apartment and cars, police said.

Well, this is a head's up that firearms of any sort should not be kept in a container that isn't secured or too heavy for someone to cart off.

Gun safes aren't just to keep people from firing weapons, it's to keep them from getting stolen.

Here's a gun safe that won't get carted off. It's the

Browning Tactical Series Mark II AR26F Gun Safe

Someone's going to have to come pretty darned prepared to cart this gun safe out of your house or office. It weighs 725 pounds --and you're going to bolt it down too. It has a 60 Minutes fire rating at 1200ºF and all sorts of other interesting and useful features.

To get the low-down (and the lowest possible price) on any gun safe, call us at www.TheSafePlace.com.  We ship all over the world. 775-358-7233.

Oh, and ask us about the best prices and the lowest shipping costs for Fort Knox gun safes.

The Gun Safe, Fire Safe, Burglary Safe Chronicles: Why I Bought a Gun Safe

The Gun Safe, Fire Safe, Burglary Safe Chronicles: Why I Bought a Ft. Knox Gun Safe
I bought a Ft. Knox gun safe to protect my guns, rifles and handguns. I also bought my safe to protect some things, valuable things, I wanted to keep out to keep out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have my things in their hands, if you know what I mean. My safe protects ammo, jewelry, some collectables, and paperwork I don’t want to lose in a fire. I bought my Ft. Knox safe, on-line, from The Safe Place.

That’s what we want to make sure happens to you, should your safe ever get knocked around. The best way to find out which safes can withstand a sustained physical attack is to talk with an expert. We’d like to suggest it’s somebody at hour offices.

The Gun Safe, Fire Safe, and Burglary Safe Chronicles: What a Gun Safe Should Do --and What a Gun Safe Should Not Do.

What a Gun Safe Should Do --and What a Gun Safe Should Not Do.

A gun safe should protect your guns and other valuables from children, from visitors, and from opportunistic thieves looking for quick loot. Your gun safe should not be something someone can pry open with a crow bar. Your gun safe should be secure, as in VERY SECURE, as you're going to have things in it you don't want to lose. Your gun safe should come from a gunsafe dealer, like us, as we can get you a price that will put our competitors to shame.

Before you buy, call us and we’ll fill you in on your options. We’re at 775-358-7233.

The Safe Place sells gun, fire, burglary, wall, floor, and deposit safes (OK, if it locks things up, safely, we sell it!). We’re located in Reno / Sparks, Nevada, but we sell safes to the world (as in the whole world).

Our phone number is 775-358-7233, our web-store is www.TheSafePlace.Com. We sell wholesale to the general public --and some of our prices are so low that our manufacturers ask us not to post them on the web, so please don’t hesitate to visit our store and call us if you have any questions.

We sell Cannon, Ft. Knox, Superior, Browning, Liberty, Gun Vault, V-Line, American Security, and Winchester safes. Call us, first, to save time, money, energy, and the very things you’re out to protect.

Gun, Fire, Floor, Burglary, and Wall Safes, In Michigan, at The Lowest Prices Possible (Call for a Quote)

In Michigan, in or around Lansing (or in any city in the state), if you’re looking for the very best, the lowest price on a safe, whether it be a gun, fire, floor, wall, pistol, burglary, or depository / drop safe, for home or business, the way to find that price, is to pick up your phone and dial The Safe Place at 775-358-7233.

You see, a manufacturer may not let some safes companies, like ours for example (we buy in big volume and sell more safes in month that many dealers sell in a year), advertise our lowest rates. So the way to find a price that is lower that what is advertised, in today’s on-line safe sales market, is to actually call for your quote.

The Safe Place is located in the warehouse friendly state of Nevada, but we ship all over the US and beyond. It’s our business --and we’re experts at it. Call us for the absolutely best prices for anything related to the safe storage of guns, valuables, paper, media, jewelery, autographs and manuscripts, coins, and anything you consider valuable --that will fit in a safe, and that you don’t want to lose to a thief, fire, or natural disaster.

One of My Favorite Gun Safes for Under $500

Now let me remind you: You do NOT buy a safe based on the price alone; you buy a safe based on the value of what you’re going to put in it, the space you have, and the size of storage space you need.

That being said:

For keeping guns out of harms way, my one of my favorite safes is the GunVault GV5900 Gun Safe

This safe only weighs 210 pounds, so getting it upstairs in your house, on the second floor of your apartment building, or into your penthouse loft is painless. You can put in a standard closet and bolt it to the floor and/or the wall. It hods 12 rifles, has four 1” locking bolts, and it’s a darn fine safe of under $500 (it actually retails in most stores for well over $500, but we currently have it for sale at $499.

Of course we have many other safes, one to fit your needs and budget. Call us at 775-358-7233.

Legendary Customer Service. The Safe Place for Gun, Fire, and Burglary Safes (plus!)

I bought my first gun safe from Bill Callos’ The Safe Place about 7 years ago. Since then I’ve bought a small burglary safe for my wife’s jewelery and a larger safe for my folks to use. The Safe Place is a place I shop at with confidence that I’m getting the right safe for the best price. I can’t offer any higher recommendation than that.

I’d like to make an observation though: When I first bought my safe it was for my guns, my ammo, some watches, and a small file with passports, birth certificates, and so on. But today, just 7 years later, my safe is where I store 2 laptops, an IPad, a couple of hard drives I use for back up, 3 HD video cameras, and a really expensive Cannon camera my wife bought me for Christmas. How the times have changed!

Thanks to The Safe Place. You can shop with them and be confident that you’re in the right place.

Thank you for the testimonial! We're at 775-358-7233.

My Neigbor Was Robbed! I Want a Safe, a Big One (for a Low Price). Can You Help?

Dear Bill,

I want a big safe. I want to be able to lock up my stuff when I’m away so it doesn’t get stolen, like my neighbors stuff did last week. The poor guy took a drive up to see his in-laws (bad enough right there) and when he came back his house had been ransacked. He lost cameras, a laptop, a TV, and a bunch of cash and coins he thought he had squirreled away in a hard-to-find place.  Turns out it wasn’t “that” hard to find. Worst of all, he thief took his guns! One of them was a pistol his grandfather had given him. The poor guy was a wreck when he came to knock on my door to ask me if I had seen or heard someone at his house.

Please advice me, as I have a big room to put it in --and short of some kind of vault, I want some space.
Sincerely,

Name Withheld by request

Our Answer (we like to keep it simple):

We have what you need --and the best way to shop for it is to call me (or anyone on my staff) : 775-358-7233

Tell me your budget, the place you want to put your safe, and your other needs, and I will come up with something perfect for you.

Thanks for asking!

Shopping for a Bargain Gun or Fire Safe? Best Prices in America, Right Here.

In a world of bargain shoppers (and we all want a great low price on the things we buy), shopping for a gun, fire, or burglary safe can get confusing. Some safes are nothing more than steel “safety” containers, susceptible to pry-bar attacks and other methods of forced entry. On the Internet and even in-person, they “look” like safes, but when put to the test, they open in minutes (or even in seconds) when someone has a few basic tools.

If you’re protecting something of little or no value, then maybe you don’t care? But when it comes to thousands of dollars worth of guns, computer and electronics gear, jewelry, heirlooms, and other valuables, you need to make sure the safe you’re shopping for is, well...actually safe.

This is where knowing someone in the safe business can help. We’d like to extend an offer to you: If you ever find yourself in a position where you want to buy a safe, simply call us first. We’ll listen to your needs and offer you genuine, no-sales-BS advice on what to look for, what to avoid, and how to get the best safe --and the best price. It’s what we do for a living.

We are The Safe Place. 775-358-7233.

We ship all over America, we sell safes at the lowest prices in America, and we don’t sell safes that aren’t safe ---to people who need more.

Gun Safe Standards

California Department of Justice Burglary Rating (CDOJ)

Regulatory Gun Safe Standards DOJ regulatory standards require a gun safe to meet either:
All of the following requirements:

  1. Shall be able to fully contain firearms and provide for their secure storage.
  2. Shall have a locking system consisting of at minimum a mechanical or electronic combination lock. The mechanical or electronic combination lock utilized by the safe shall have at least 10,000 possible combinations consisting of a minimum three numbers, letters, or symbols. The lock shall be protected by a case-hardened (Rc 60+) drill-resistant steel plate, or drill-resistant material of equivalent strength.
  3. Boltwork shall consist of a minimum of three steel locking bolts of at least ½ inch thickness that intrude from the door of the safe into the body of the safe or from the body of the safe into the door of the safe, which are operated by a separate handle and secured by the lock.
  4. Shall be capable of repeated use. The exterior walls shall be constructed of a minimum 12-gauge thick steel for a single-walled safe, or the sum of the steel walls shall add up to at least .100 inches for safes with two walls. Doors shall be constructed of a minimum of two layers of 12-gauge steel, or one layer of 7-gauge steel compound construction.
  5. Door hinges shall be protected to prevent the removal of the door. Protective features include, but are not limited to: hinges not exposed to the outside, interlocking door designs, dead bars, jeweler’s lugs and active or inactive locking bolts.

or All of the following requirements:

  1. Is listed as an Underwriters Laboratories Residential Security Container;
  2. Is able to fully contain firearms;
  3. Provides for the secure storage of firearms.

Burglary Classification Residential Security Container (RSC) signifies a combination or keylocked unit designed to offer protection against entry by common mechanical tools. Performance tests are conducted against the entire unit. The basic standard used to investigate in this category is UL 1037, "Antitheft Alarms and Devices.

  1. An Anti-theft device, as defined by Paragraph 1.3, shall resist at least 5 minutes of attack that would defeat its purpose.
  2. Any disassembly of the protected property required to make it removable, is to be included in the 5 minutes of attack test.
  3. The tools used in the test are to include hammers, chisels, adjustable wrenches, pry bars, punches and screwdrivers. The hammers are not to exceed 3 pounds in head weight, and no tool is to exceed 18 inches in length.
  4. The product under test is to be mounted securely in its intended position, and the attack is to be carred out by one operator.

BURGLAR SAFES:

Burglar safes are usually made of solid steel plate or a combination of solid steel and composite fill material such as concrete. These safes are divided into categories based on the level of protection delivered and the testing endured. Here we will discuss only seven classes: B-Rate, U.L. RSC Rating, B/C Rate, C-Rate, U.L. TL-15, U.L. TL-30 and TL-30 X6.

B-RATE SAFES (ALSO U.L. RSC, RESIDENTIAL SECURITY CONTAINERS):

B-Rate is a catchall rating for essentially any box with a lock on it. The safe industry had an unwritten standard of ¼ inch body, ½ inch door. As steel prices (and shipping costs) increased manufacturers tried many things to reduce their costs. No tests are given to provide this rating. When buying a B-rate safe, look at things such as lock work, hard plates, and relocks.

U.L. Residential Security Container rating (RSC) - This UL rating is based on testing conducted for a net working time of five minutes, on all sides, with a range of tools. See U.L. TL-15 and TL-30 descriptions below for "net working time" description.

B/C-Rate Safes

This is a catchall rating for safes with at least a 1/4" steel body, 1/2 inch door PLUS additional 10 or 12 guage metal layers where composite fire resistant material is also deployed. No tests are given to provide this rating. Look at the lock work, relocks and other features when making your decision.

C-Rate Safes

This is defined as a ½ inch thick steel box with a 1-inch thick door and a lock. As before, NO tests are given to provide this rating. Look at the lock work, relocks and other features when making your decision.

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) Ratings
http://www.ul.com

TL-15

Safes given a U.L. TL-15 rating have all passed standardized tests defined in UL Standard 687 using the same tools and usually the same group of testing engineers.Construction Requirements

  • U.L. listed Group II, 1 or 1R combination lock.
  • 750 lbs. minimum or comes with instructions for anchoring in a larger safe, concrete blocks or on the premises where used.
  • Body walls of material equivalent to at least 1" open hearth steel with a minimum tensile strength of 50,000 P.S.I.
  • Walls fastened in a manner equivalent to continuous 1/4" penetration weld of open hearth steel with minimum tensile strength of 50,000 P.S.I.
  • One hole 1/4" or less, to accommodate electrical conductors arranged to have no direct view of the door or locking mechanism.

The label means that the safe successfully resisted entry (i.e. opening the door or making a 6" square opening entirely through the door or front face) for a NET working time of 15 minutes using "…common hand tools, drills, punches hammers, and pressure applying devices." Net working time means simply "when the tool comes off the safe the clock stops". There are over fifty different types of attacks that can be used to gain entrance into the safe. Usually they will try only 2 or 3 based on what they know about the product, and they know a lot.

TL-30

Construction requirements are identical to the TL-15 above. Tests are essentially the same as the TL-15 tests except for the net working time. Testors are allowed 30 minutes and a few more tools (abrasive cutting wheels and power saws) to help them gain entrance. The label signifies the testors were unable to open the door or make a 6" square opening entirely through the door or front face within 30 minutes. Keep in mind these engineers have the manufacturing blue prints and can disassemble the safe being tested before the test begins to see how it works. They know their stuff. TL-30 x 6 - The TL-30 (30-minute) test is conducted on all six (6) sides of the safe.

Safes, to Buy, Priced Low, and With Extras, Information, and Some Education in General

I came across this informative article on the web last night. The author is a locksmith in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan --and he's done a very fair job on the basics of safes.

Note: I've been in this business for years --and I can tell you flat out that while you want to go into buying a safe with some basic knowledge, the industry and product lines change rather quickly. New features, even ones added in the last 6 months, make safes "safer" --offer more storage options, and many models blur the lines between gun, fire, and high security safes.

To kill a LOT of search and study time, I'd like to suggest you spend 10 minutes on the phone with someone who lives and breaths safes (as in 1000's of them). Call anyone on our team at The Safe Place: 775-358-7233.

The article I found and appreciated for it's general overview, here:

When buying a safe, you will have three basic types of safes to choose from:

The fire-resistant safe
The burglar-resistant safe
The combination fire and burglar resistant safe

Fire Resistant Safe

The fire-resistant safe is designed to protect paper from fire. It is constructed with a thin metal double wall design which allows a fire-resistant insulating material to be put between the walls. In the event of a fire, the insulating material releases moisture which keeps the interior safe temperature below the burning point of paper. These safes are rated by the length of time they will protect their contents under test conditions. A 1/2-hour rating is used only for small fire-insulated boxes. Most fire-resistant safes have 1-hour or 2-hour ratings. These are adequate for the protection of paper records in normal residential or commercial fires. The 4-hour rating is used for record rooms. If a safe is labeled as a fire resistant container, that label is usually provided by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL). However there are other testing agencies which test and label safes, such as Japan Institute of Standards (JIS). These labels are equivalent to UL labels.

The burglary resistance of a fire safe is minimal. Any metal box with a combination lock is described as a Class 1 burglary resistant container.

The media safe is designed to protect electronic media such as computer disks and video tapes. Like regular fire safes, media safes have UL ratings for protection times. Electronic media are more sensitive to heat and humidity than paper so media safes are differently constructed and much more heavily insulated than regular fire safes with the same rating.

Burglar Resistant Safe

The burglar-resistant safe is designed to contain valuables. It is constructed with solid metal walls and a heavy door resistant to attack by drilling, cutting or prying. Hardened and drill resistant metals are often used to slow down attempts to break in to this safe. These safes are rated in two ways:

The class rating (1-5) is based on a combination of door and wall thickness, and in the higher ratings (3-5), resistance to certain forms of attack such as drilling and cutting with a torch. Insurance companies use this rating to designate how much cash may be kept in the safe.
The UL rating is a system developed by Underwriters Laboratory which rates safes based on how long they will resist various forms of attack. The UL ratings start at 15 minutes and go to one hour. As well, they add the following letter designations: DR drill resistant, TL tool resistant, TR torch resistant, TRTL tool and torch resistant and finally the X6 designation is reserved for the very best bankers and jewelers safes. They would be designated: TRTL60X6. When buying a safe, keep in mind that any UL designated burglary safe is of high quality and gives excellent protection.

There are two specialized burglary resistant safes that are commonly used for storage of cash, the in-floor safe and the drop safe.

The in-floor safe is a round or square tube with a heavily constructed lid which lifts out when unlocked. The tube is usually installed in a concrete floor or it can be installed on the floor surface in a concrete block which adds weight and protects the tube from attack. The main advantage of this safe is the low cost. Since the exposed lid is the only part that is heavily constructed, good protection can be achieved inexpensively.

The drop safe allows envelopes or bank bags to be inserted into the safe while the safe remains locked. The drop can be as simple as a slot in the lid of an in floor safe, or it can be an elaborate hopper or drawer designed to allow large items to be inserted. These safes are used where frequent cash deposits must be made to deter robbery. Often the manager is the only one with access to the "dropped" cash. These safes are never UL burglary rated and are not recommended for long term storage of cash. They are also quite light and should be bolted to the floor or counter to deter the smash-and-grab thief.

Combination Burglary and Fire Resistant Safe

The combination burglary and fire-resistant safe is designed to give protection against both fire and burglary. It is usually designed as a burglary safe with a secondary wall constructed inside the safe which contains insulation. This safe can be UL rated for both burglary and fire protection.

Another type of combination fire and burglar resistant safe is one where a small burglary resistant container is installed in a larger fire-resistant container. In newer units the fire resistance is UL labeled but often the burglary container is not.

Older Safes

Most older safes are not labeled as either burglar or fire resistant. We can only guess at their true quality and in the case of the burglary containers rate them Class 1, 2, or 3 based on door and wall thickness, according to insurance classifications.

Another point to remember is that often insurance companies ask their clients to buy a safe based on weight or to have the safe bolted to the floor if it isn't heavy enough. Many of those clients come to us wanting to buy an inexpensive fire-resistant safe and have it bolted to the floor. We believe this is a poor solution. Bolting a safe to the floor does not increase its burglary resistance. It might slow a burglar in an attempt to remove the safe, but fire safes can be pried open relatively easily. Thus the burglar may not take the safe itself, but the valuables inside would still be easily accessible.

One final point: we recommend monitored alarm systems for all burglary resistant containers. Given enough time, knowledge and tools, a burglar can break into any safe. Reducing the time the burglar will remain undetected allows the safe to do its job.

Fire / Gun safe Buying Tip No. 6 (a 5 second read!)

Check the Steel!

A safe might look big, heavy, and intimidating, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be hacked open with fire ax.

We recommend 10 gauge or 8 gauge or even thicker steel. Your safe should have a UL RSC (Underwriters Laboratories "Residential Security Container") or better rating.

How to KNOW, for sure, the safe you want (and thinking of buying) is really, REALLY "safe" ?

Fire Safes Need to Actually Protect Your Valuables in a Fire

Fire Safes Need to Actually Protect Your Valuables in a Fire

Not all fire safes are the same. Some manufactures, especially those that make safes to be sold at very low prices, make safes that look like fire safes, but don’t, when the pressure is on, ACT like fire safes.

Wouldn’t it be a shame to get a great discount on a fire safe, maybe the lowest price in town, only to have a fire and find out the safe couldn’t handle the heat?

To keep that from happening (You’ll only really curse a safe --or offer praise --is a worst case scenario. The message is: Expect the best, prepare for the worst), call us at The Safe Place: 775-358-7233.

No nonsense, no run-around, no slick sales pitches. Just good info, good safes, sold at great prices.

Safe Fun Cabinets, Fire Safes, and Safe for Sale. The Safe Place!

Gun cabinets and safes are usually an afterthought when someone is thinking about investing in a rifle or handgun. But, of course, we want to keep our guns out of the hands of children and ANYONE else who shouldn't have their hands on them!

Note here: A steel gun cabinet or metallic looking safe might keep your guns out of the hands of kids, but not someone armed with a pry-bar. You'll want a safe that's REALLY a safe.

How do you tell the difference? It's easy; let a professional show and tell you what you need to know. Call us at 775-358-7233 and we will bring you up to speed, get you a discount (if not the lowest price possible), and we'll see your safe delivered without hassles, discreetly. We are The Safe Place.
