What is a Reinforced Fire Door? Gun Safe and Safe 101

Well, you’ll have to know that most safes in the industry build “composite” style doors, meaning that they are layered (steel, insulation, steel). Let’s take the company “Fort Knox,” for example, which reinforces it’s safe doors quite excellently.

The reinforced fire door construction starts with a solid plate of steel followed by two layers of fire board and finished with another layer of steel. In Fort Knox’s case, the reinforced fire door also provides added strength from the steel edge of the door. The radius or bends in the door add strength but only if it is supported from the inside of the door with extra steel. More steel plus the radius edges means tougher door!
