Gun Safe Ratings; What's an RSC?

When buying a gun safe it is important to know the specifications of that safe and the level of security it is classified as.  A gun safe with a high level of security is considered to have a TL rating.  But not everyone can afford a TL rated gun safe.  These safes also weigh thousands of pounds so a consumer may also not be able to accommodate the weight of such a gun safe.
An entry level rating for a gun safe is a residential security
container also refereed to as an RSC.  This is an absolute must for an entry level gun safe.  But the problem with this rating is that such a wide option of gun safes can fall under this classification. All this classification means is that if your lock is defeated, an external spring loaded re-locker will snap into place preventing the door to be opened.  It does not have anything to do with how pry resistant your door is, how well your door seals to prevent heat or cold smoke from entering your safe in case of fire, or how thick of walls your gun safe has. I would like to go over few things to consider when buying a gun safe listed as a residential security container. A fire rating exceeding thirty minutes is necessary in case your gun safe is involved in a house fire.  Especially if your gun safe is located inside your home. There are a lot more flammable objects inside your home versus being on a cool concrete slab.
The construction of the door on your gun safe will determine how pry resistant your safe is.  Make sure your door is made up of thick steel. And also make sure the body of your gun safe is made up of thick steel or multiple layers of steel. This will help against power tools attacking the body of your safe.  For more information on gun safes visit The Safe Place or call us at 775-358-7233.
